James Bratt grew up on the San Juan Ridge, where his mother and father developed raw land they purchased in the early 1980's. James's father Jim spent over 40 years as a steward of the land working with the USDA and NRCS to improve the health of our forests by pruning, thinning, masticating, and reducing fire danger. James started helping his father in the forest doing fuel reduction when he was 10 years old and was strong enough to hold a small chainsaw. His father is a licensed contractor and together they have built and maintained their 200 acre farm including all infrastructure and buildings from scratch. Most of which by utilizing the timber harvested during development. James began sawing lumber with a bandsaw mill with a neighbor when he was 19 years old. He apprenticed under another local sawyer working jobs around Northern California until finally purchasing his own mobile sawmill with his father in 2016. Since then, James has been supplying and contributing to the community his quality milling work.
